Michael Hall Flaxman’s Valley Syrah
Shiraz | Eden Valley, South Australia, Australia
The Naimanya vineyard sits high in the tiny sub-region of Flaxman’s Valley on soils of sandy loam, gravel and quartz over clay. At 520m elevation it is one of the highest Shiraz vineyards in South Australia.
“This is a tight, brooding release, all dark chocolate and blackberry, asphalt and aromatic/woodsy/clove-like spices, almost but not quite into saltbush territory. This again feels pushed in ripeness terms, though redcurrant characters help to brighten if not freshen the load, and it feels beautifully polished and soft as it glides through your mouth. The tannin here, really, is pretty special; fine-grained, velvety and assertive at once, though alcohol then thins the finish slightly. Weight and winemaking are not in question here: there’s a lot of bold flavour, and its delivery is silky smooth.” – 92 Points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
